OK, I’ve been feeling this season is a bit off but couldn’t put my finger on it. Finally it dawns on me, they have been putting too much effort on giving out immunity, two full episodes per week to find someone to not cook in a COOKING competition! So the challenges on Wednesday and Thursday are very much not that important to the competition as worst dish has no consequences in these challenges. In previous years, one episode of immunity challenge per week is a chance for the contestants to relax a bit and have a fun challenge but it doesn’t feel like that this year. It felt very force and dull, especially with the editing of the stressing out and confessions as if they will be eliminated if they don’t do well in the immunity challenge! That said, I do appreciate they’ve at least put some effort in setting most challenges with a certain main ingredient to cook with or a theme to the challenge this year instead of the ubiquitous cook-anything-you-want challenges in recent years…

Update May 14, 2022: OK, backtracking a bit, just realised the past couple of years were the same with Wednesday and Thursday episodes. The difference was Mystery Box challenge was on Wednesday, so it wasn’t that obvious that 2 episodes were spent to find someone for immunity, LOL… However this year Wednesday is not Mystery Box, so it is more glaring that 2 episodes are spent just to find someone for immunity…

To be honest, very disappointed with the two eliminations in Tassie this week, not because of who were eliminated, but because of inadequate equipment! Sure Alvin may have chosen the wrong dish to cook in an outdoor challenge, but having oysters as the core ingredient, there are not many dishes to cook with it, and oyster omelette is one of the most well known dish in east Asia. We are at the top 6 stage, the production crew should have foreseen the type of dishes that could be cooked and provided the contestants with the right equipment to use like a super-charge wok burner to use outdoor! After so many years and with so many Asian contestants through the kitchen, while the kitchen is stocked with all the fancy equiment, and yet they don’t have a proper basic wok burner! As for Julie, not having enough oven to use sent her home. As soon as she put the cake batter in the bottom shelf, I knew that’s the end, not only having to worry about having lamb smell permeated into the cake, the extra heat reflected from the base of the oven would have burnt the bottom of the cake in any case! The trays were so near the base, it is almost like sitting the trays on pizza stone!

The perennial problem of late service! Really we are 14 seasons into the competition and they still haven’t address this problem. I’m glad the judges did take late service into account this time but that doesn’t solve the problem. For example, what if Sarah and Daniel had put up good mains and desserts while being late for more than 30 minutes, how were the judges going to judge who would advance into the final? Penalize Billie when she was the only one serving on time with flaws in her dishes while the other two basically got extra 30 minutes to perfect their dishes? Sarah did put out a successful lamb main with the extra time, but if she had to serve on time, the lamb would be baaing or bleating on the judges table! I think they should be more upfront with the rule of late service. For example, if they are late 15 minutes, that course should straight away be deemed 50% failed even if the dishes were good. If the course is late by 30 minutes, then that course should be judged a failed course. Then it should be clear to the contestants that extra time used in cooking from late service should be penalised.

Ep 62, Tuesday, July 12, 2022

  1. Hero ingredient Chilli!!!!!
So why does everyone always think of curries! There are so many beautiful European dishes that have 🌶 chillies ! Can contestants think out side the box and cook something else other the curries! It’s get boring!

    • To be fair, this is a relay challenge, so the most realistic solution is to cook something everyone is familiar with so the handover is not too confusing. However I do agree that curries are “overcooked” in the last few years in Masterchef and getting boring to watch. That said, I also think relay challenge is more exciting to watch if it leads to elimination so there’s a danger element. Tonight’s relay challenge felt very “meh” as the worst dish has no consequences.
