I can’t believe January 2020 is almost over, where has the time gone so quickly? I was going to do a post on most popular Chinese movie songs of the last decade since The Oscars is just around the corner, but as usual I got sidetracked while trying to compile a list, LOL. While doing some research, I came across a list of the Chinese songs that are the most watched music videos on YouTube. The list was for the Chinese songs that first hit 100 million views in the last ten years. So I thought, why not, and immediately abandoned my initial intention of just listing movie songs! This list is arranged by the first 20 Mandopop songs to achieve 100 million hits by timeline (that is when they first attended 100 million views), so they are not the on-going list of the current most watched music videos which will continue to change day by day.

The song that broke the record becoming the first Mandopop song to achieve 100 million views on YouTube was A Little Happiness (小幸運) by Hebe Tien (田馥甄) from the 2015 movie Our Times (我的少女時代) in August, 2016. This was quickly followed by another movie song Those Bygone Years (那些年) from the 2011 movie You Are the Apple of My Eye (那些年,我們一起追的女孩) in November of 2016. Now you see how I came across this list while researching as the first two songs to get 100 million views on YouTube are from movies! So here are the Top 10 Mandopop music videos of the past decade. I will do a Part 2 soon for song 11 to 20, so keep a watch out for it.

A couple of notes with this list: Since YouTube is blocked in mainland China, and they have their own video sharing platform called Bili Bili (哔哩哔哩), so the list does not include the number of views from mainland China; also the third Chinese song to achieve 100 million views is a song called 99 Roses (癡情玫瑰花) by Taiwanese duo Under Lover but the song is sung mainly in Taiwanese dialect, so I excluded it as this is a Mandarin list.

1. A Little Happiness (小幸運) by Hebe Tien (田馥甄) 2015
Note: Currently ranked #3 with over 181 million hits as of January 2020.

2. Those Bygone Years (那些年) by Fox Hu (胡夏) 2011

3. You Exist In My Song (我的歌聲裡) by Wanting (曲婉婷) 2012

4. Twilight (不為誰而作的歌) by JJ Lin (林俊傑) 2015
Note: A thank you song to all the kindness of strangers. The Chinese title translated literally as “A Song Written for No One in Particular”, still not sure why the English title is “Twilight” as it doesn’t convey the meaning of the song?
This song is also the winner of the Best Non-English Song at the Pensado Awards 2016

5. The Distance of Love (以後別做朋友) by Eric Chou (周興哲) 2014
Note: The youngest Chinese male artist to achieve 100 million views at the age of 21 in 2017.

6. Love Confession (告白氣球) by Jay Chou (周杰倫) 2016
Note: Currently ranked #2 with over 205 million hits as of January 2020. So far this song took the shortest time, 289 days, to reach 100 million views.

7. Shouldn’t Be (不該) by Jay Chou (周杰倫) & Amei (張惠妹) 2016

8. Practice Love (修煉愛情) by JJ Lin (林俊傑) 2013
Note: I’ve also included the 11-minute mini movie that complements the music video below.

9. Stranger In The North (漂向北方) by Namewee (黃明志) featuring Leehom Wang (王力宏) 2017
Note: The second fastest to achieve 100 million views in 290 days, after Jay Chou’s Love Confession.

10. Actor (演員) by Joker Xue (薛之謙) 2015
