My Kitchen Rules 5 (2014)

Channel 7 has announced the fifth season of My Kitchen Rules will return to our TV screen on Monday, January 27, 2014. After the outcries of the show becoming too nasty last year, the promos for this year’s series has been mild in comparison, so far no couples have been portrayed as being deliberately mean or intentionally nasty. Instead the promos, well those that I have seen anyway, concentrated on the quirkiness and being fun, and of course the delusional couples and the noticeably dial-down bitchiness, more like the earlier seasons. Hopefully that is the case with this new series, not just the promos.

Oh, was looking forward to this episode, but was disappointed and had suspicion they had only started cooking after they got married (as there was no mention of learning to cook when young), and one who followed recipes diligently rather than able to improvise. Such simple things as putting the undercooked lobsters back on the grill (they were not overcooked which you cannot undo), pulling out the lamb shank meat and boiling down the sauce, carefully scooping out the sugar and re-measuring (or even weighing the amount of measured-out cocoa and sugar and re-calculate the amount of sugar in the bowl since you already know how much cocoa is in there???) they did not seem able to do. Unfortunately can’t see them lasting long in this competition.

LOL, is it the first time ever that the sabotage came from within the team? Poor Harry, he really is accident prone! Christo would have been better doing it all by himself, instead he was doing the job of three person, his own job, Harry’s job and rescuing Harry’s mistakes, LOL. If Christo is smart, he should have let Harry loose finishing setting up the restaurant while he should have started in the kitchen as soon as the clock started its countdown at 3 hours to go.
BTW, really envious of that kitchen, looks like a commercial kitchen, so much working spaces!

Local girl scores 74 in MKR – Very interesting read, apparently each team have to submit 11 original three-course menus (remember reading in earlier seasons teams only needed to submit 3 or 4 sets of menus)! No wonder some of them did not seem to know their own recipes, it would be hard to perfect all 11 sets of menus. Even if they practise one recipe per day, it would still take more than a month just to practise each recipe once!

Glad to see Uel and Shannelle finally cooked dishes from their heritage, rather than trying to do fancy, weird combinations. Although the coconut crêpes are more a snack rather than dessert, but then Asians don’t really have proper desserts, LOL. Surely with their menus, the judges would be able to guess which team cooked what?
LOL, they finally designed a space for the contestants to wait during tasting time. Remembered in earlier seasons, they had to wait in the pantry with fold-up chairs among all the vegies?

LOL, after watching 2 episodes of the truck challenge, I wonder, would you really pay honestly for the meal? I’m sure the smart “customers” would participate in the filming just for the “free” meal considering that they are cooked by not-very-good amateurs for a high rating TV programme where the producers/TV network are making a load of money. Just saying… The cynical side of me even suspect that the result of the challenge is “adjusted” to make sure which group/teams go to the cook off… I can just imagine the invisible interviewer nudging the “customers” or making suggestions for them not to pay too much for certain unsatisfying dishes/teams more than others… Am I thinking too much? LOL.

LOL, Uel and the cucumbers and the bemused look on Colin’s face! We were taught to rub the ends of cucumber to remove bitter juice too, I think all M’sians/Singaporeans did that.
Also had a good laugh when Josh and Danielle did their “experimental” fried apple pies. The way they shaped their apple pies looked eerily like my version way back in 2005 although they did use a different pastry and I did also fry my turnover apple pies inspired by Macca’s apple pies but Chinese do deep fry a lot of these pastry snacks.

LOL, what’s with Uel and Shannelle and salt and sugar? It really shows their inexperience in cooking, especially with sauces which needed to reduce, they really need to under season in the beginning, then adjust towards the end. Nestum is a sweet cereal, I prefer to use it for making biscuits rather than a savoury dish! However rather impressed that MKR kitchen stocks Nestum and salted duck eggs, hahaha, products placement and all that?
LOL, just saw the new promo for MCA6 with this year’s contestants and spouting best ‘home cooks’ with handed down family recipes, isn’t that what MKR used to promote before personalities got in the way the past couple of seasons? If I remember correctly, MCA always said ‘best cooks in the country’ and refrained from using the word ‘home’.
After all the false promises the past three seasons (cry wolf much, anyone?), it is very hard for us to believe anything MCA has to say now, even if there is a smidgen of truth about season 6 with good home cooks. Then again MCA refuses to publish most of the recipes online anyway since season 2, so what’s the point of any good recipes being featured? As viewers who want to try out any recipes from the show could not access those recipes? At least MKR are giving out all the recipes, even if they are not very good, albeit with revisions for online versions to make them better than what the contestants actually cooked on the show…
