  1. Hi Sea Dragon,

I just love your website & what you do for your viewers. I like your photos & the guidance you give to viewers (hope that is the correct word).
Since I cannot tolerate store bought cakes & desserts (they are too sweet, rich & greasy with oil/dairy), I have to make my own. Even though I love what you have on your blog, I cannot follow the recipes – I cut down on the sugar & oil – I often substitute dairy products with oil and/non-fat yogurt and applesauce for sugar. So, my end results are never the same as yours. Nor will I dare share them with friends (only share with my husband). I basically bake/cook what I can eat.
As such, I can never be a member of your HCC (cos you have to share recipes). I notice that some recipes are protected. I assume only HCC members can access. Though I think this is a good concept – having a community of like-minded cooks sharing their recipes & experiences – people like me would not be able to have the benefit of these ‘protected’ recipes & info.
I’m just wondering if you would ever consider making these info available to non-members at some point.

    Thanks,
    Julie

  2. Hi Julie,
    Thanks for the kind words.

In regards to joining HCC, everyone is welcome to join. I’m actually not that strict with the rule, I’m just trying to get members to contribute to and participating in the forum so it is not an ‘idle’ forum. If some members participate regularly in disscussions, help answer questions (especially if there’s a recipe request from someone and you have the recipe or know where to access the recipe by providing links) in the forum, I’ll also allow them to access the password-protected posts even if they have not posted/shared a recipe. But this is a slow way to go about it, as it may takes weeks before you can prove yourself to be a regular contributer to the forum.

The quicker way is to share recipes in the forum. I have stated that you can post untested/untried recipes from cookbooks, magazines, newspaper cuttings you have, and you need only share two recipes before you can access all the password-protected posts here. The reason being I realize that many of you out there may be in a similar situation as yours, or that they may have just started to learn to cook/bake, and thus are unable to share tried & tested recipes, so I allow sharing of untested recipes, in this way no one is discriminated against from accessing the password-protected posts here. If you’re worried about copyright infringement, sharing one or two recipes from a cookbook is alright especially if you clearly state the author and book it’s from, and as long as you don’t reproduce (word-for-word) more than 10% of the material from a book. I see it as a way of advertisement for the book as well, in many instances I’ve found myself going out and buying the cookbook just because someone shared recipes from the book and have gotten good reviews.

This is also a way for us to access recipes of cookbooks/magazines/newspapers from different countries, as none of us are able to buy/own every good recipe books/magazines available out there from every countries. Especially if you have old out-of-print good cookbooks/magazines, those recipes are a treasure and I would be very happy if you may be able to share them, there are many of us who like to compare different versions of a recipe, in regards to new/old ingredients and different techniques, before attempting it.

In your situation, where you are cooking low fat/sugar food, you may also be able to share this type of recipes with us, I’m sure there are many people out there who also like to have low fat/sugar recipes. So I hope you will join as a member of HCC.

  3. Sea Dragon,

You are generous. It’ll be quite a while before I can post any recipe of my mine – I need to practise, practise and practise. But I do enjoy your blog.

    Thank you for your encouragement.

    Julie

  5. Hi Angelia,
Just go to the link here:

    http://homecookingclub.aceboard.com/

Then share the 2 recipes in the appropriate sections, then let me know under the section ‘About Home Cooking Club’ and click ‘New membership Rules from November 2008 ‘ (or just click on the link I gave in the first line of this post, see above), I’ll then give you the passwords. Welcome.

    • Jenny,
Thanks. To get the passwords, you have to be a member of ‘Home cooking Club’. All you have to do is go to ‘Home cooking Club’ (register as a member first, link is under the calendar in the side bar), then share 5 recipes with us over there. Once you have done that, let me know and you will then be able to access the passwords to all these recipes.

  9. Dear SeaDragon,
I’m extremely happy I’ve come across your website. As Asian American I can tell you I love my Chinese desserts and pastries – to finally find a site that has some of the recipes is truly fantastic! Thank you for sharing the recipes. How can I acquire some of the recipes that require a password?
I’m looking forward to trying some of these recipes… and thank you again.

    Sincerely,
    LeeYong
